Curriculum Vitae

Brian Gillis examines relevant socio-cultural issues as consequent evidence of particular historic moments by exposing their genesis, chronology, and related outcomes. He is interested in history as both an archive and a mine; as that which can chronicle and act as a catalyst for the reconsideration of one’s world. Gillis's work uses a variety production strategies and conceptual approaches, which often draw content from specific sites and related institutions.

Gillis is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including a Brink Award Nomination from the Henry Art Gallery and fellowships from the Illinois Arts Council and Oregon Arts Commission, as well as residencies from the MacDowell Colony and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including recent solo projects at the Milwaukee Art Museum, CUE Art Foundation, and Heilongjiang University in China. His work has appeared in books from McGraw-Hill and Bloomsbury Publishing, and reviewed in the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal. Gillis received BAs in Studio Art and Art Education from Humboldt State University, and MFA from NYSCC at Alfred University. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Oregon.
