Three from A&AA win faculty awards
Three School of Architecture and Allied Arts faculty members were among the thirteen recipients of the 2014-15 school year Fund for Faculty Excellence Award. Professors Anya Kivarkis and Laura Vandenburgh of the Department of Art, and Rich Margerum, professor and department head for the Department of Planning, and Public Management, were selected due to their influence on University of Oregon academics within their respective fields.

A&AA celebrates its 100th anniversary
Join the celebration with a 100th Birthday party on Friday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the south entrance of Lawrence Hall. There will be a birthday cake and all-school photo shoot. Be a part of the historic moment. Then, spend the afternoon in Lawrence Hall during the open house to visit the special exhibitions in the A&AA Library, LaVerne Krause Gallery, classrooms, and studios. See work by architecture, art, product design, landscape architecture, planning, public policy and management, and historic preservation on the second floor of Lawrence Hall.
UO museum exhibits honor A&AA’s 100th
In honor of A&AA’s 100th birthday celebration, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) on the University of Oregon campus is hosting three exhibitions featuring former A&AA faculty member David McCosh and former A&AA student Gordon Gilkey, all commencing in October.
Majors Fair showcases all A&AA offerings
The annual A&AA Majors Fair is scheduled this year for Thursday, October 23, from 4-6 p.m. in Lawrence Hall. The event offers a relaxed atmosphere where all undecided, “redeciding” and exploring students can speak personally with faculty members, professional advisers, and student representatives from A&AA.
A&AA presents 100 alumni stories
The academic year 2014-15 marks the 100th year since the School of Architecture and Allied Arts was established. As we explored the school’s archives preparing for our centennial celebrations, we found a treasure-trove of photos tracing the school’s physical changes as well as changes in faculty, leadership, and students. We will share some of those images with you in every e-news this year, beginning with this issue.

Warpinski’s “Surface Tension” at Fort Collins’ Lincoln Center
The Lincoln Center Art Galleries in Fort Collins, Colorado, will present “Surface Tension,” a photographic series by UO Professor Terri Warpinski with poetry by Laura Winter, September 12 through November 1, 2014. “Surface Tension” is a series of photographs by Warpinski exploring the political borderlands along the U.S.-Mexico border and the Occupied Palestinian Territories juxtaposed against images of present-day Berlin, Germany.
'WIRED' features Rick Silva’s futuristic birds
WIRED has featured Assistant Professor Rick Silva’s futuristic bird project in a recent issue. Silva teaches animation in the UO Department of Art’s Digital Arts Program.
Monograph combines typography, photography in whimsical imagery
Oxide, a new book by Craig Hickman, a professor in the UO Digital Arts Program, was featured in a recent issue of Hyperallergic. Writer Allison Meier describes Hickman’s 128-page monograph as “[an] alternate reality with composites of photographs of decaying Americana, 19th and early 20th century U.S. Patent Office images, a 19th century costume text, and other archive imagery.”
